Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], December 27 (ANI): As the whole nation mourns the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his cousin brother Amarjit Singh Kohli also expressed his deepest condolences on the demise.
Remembering his brother, Kohli said that he was a person who lived a simple life and used to inspire everyone, especially when it came to studies.
Kohli, who lives in Dehradun, said that as soon as they received the information about the former PM’s demise, the whole family was in shock.
Speaking to ANI, Amarjit Singh Kohli said, “He was our uncle’s son. He used to visit us since childhood, he loved us a lot and blessed us. He used to inspire everyone to study. He lived his whole life in simplicity and there was nothing showy in his life.”
“As soon as we came to know about his demise through television, we were deeply shocked. It is our wish that God gives him a good place,” he added.
Locals at former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Amritsar residence also expressed their condolences on his demise. They recalled their past interactions and experiences with him.
Locals conveyed that Singh had come there after being elected as a Member of Parliament. He used to live in Amritsar around several decades ago and he had done his schooling from there.
A resident said, “As per I know, he (former PM Dr Manmohan Singh) used to live here 70-80 years ago. He had visited here once after becoming the PM. We are saddened by his demise as he was a PM from Amritsar…”
Another resident Rajkumar said, “This is Manmohan Singh’s house. He used to live here with his family. When we heard about his demise, we all were sad.”
Manmohan Singh passed away at AIIMS, Delhi, on Thursday evening at the age of 92 due to age-related medical conditions. He had a sudden loss of consciousness at home after which he was rushed to the AIIMS Delhi.
The mortal remains of the former PM will be kept at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi for public viewing.
As per the Congress party sources, the ‘last darshan’ will be scheduled for Saturday between 8:00 to 10:00 in the morning.
Singh, renowned for introducing the 1991 economic liberalisation reforms as the Finance Minister of India, will be cremated near Rajghat, at the location where the last rites of Prime Ministers are performed.
Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932. Apart from being an economist, Manmohan Singh served as Reserve Bank of India governor from 1982-1985. He was the 13th PM of India with his tenure from 2004-2014 and was the longest-serving PM after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
Serving as the finance minister of India in PV Narasimha Rao’s government, Singh has been given credit for economic liberalisation in the country in 1991. The reforms made the Indian economy more accessible to foreign investors, which increased FDI and reduced government control. It greatly contributed to the country’s economic growth. (ANI)
